A Great Leader Always Takes Their Instructions From God

Now Jericho was securely shut up because of the children of Israel; none went out, and none came in. And the Lord said to Joshua: “See! I have given Jericho into your hand, its king, and the mighty men of valour. You shall march around the city, all you men of war; you shall go all around the city once. This you shall do six days.

Joshua 6:1-3 (NKJV)

God gave Joshua the battle strategy for capturing the City of Jericho, and as he and the people obeyed the instructions, they obtained the victory.

A great leader depends on God to give them their battle strategy because they know He is the all-powerful God who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ (1 Corinthians 15:57).

We know that Jesus Christ came on earth to save mankind by dying on the Cross to forgive us of our sins, so that we can have eternal life. When the time came for Him to be betrayed and handed to Pilate to be crucified, He was sorrowful and prayed, saying “Father, if it is Your will, take this cup away from Me; nevertheless not My will, but Yours, be done” (Luke 22:42).

This is the mark of a great leader, the ability to hear from God and do what He tells you regardless of your will. Jesus Christ, Who is the greatest leader that has ever lived, decided to put His will aside and do the will of the Father, and in doing this, teaches us to do the same.

Before David became king of Israel he was hiding in caves with his soldiers from king Saul who wanted to kill him. One day when they returned to their camp in Ziglag, they discovered that they had been invaded by the Amalekites and their camp was attacked and burned with fire, and all the women and children taken captive.

David enquired of the Lord saying, “Shall I pursue this troop? Shall I overtake them?” God answered him, “Pursue, for you shall surely overtake them and without fail recover all.” (1 Samuel 30:8). Once David got the green light from God, he and his men pursued, and they recovered all the Amalekites had carried away.

Another great and fearless leader, Deborah the Prophetess, who was the only female Judge over Israel, reminded Barak, the army commander about the command of The Lord for them to deploy troops at Mount Tabor so that God could deliver their oppressors, Jabin king of Canaan in their hands. Barak refused to go out to battle without Deborah so she went to the battlefield with him. As a result of obeying God’s commands, God destroyed Jabin king of Canaan in the presence of the children of Israel (Judges 4).

As leaders in whatever field you have been called to, you should cultivate the habit of taking your instructions from God. He has called you to the field that you find yourself in, therefore please turn over to Him whatever challenges you may face, He is more than able to give you the wisdom to overcome it.

Prayer

Dear Father, I thank You that You are the God of Wisdom. Please help me in whatever field You have called me to lead, to take my instructions from You. Help me to be like Jesus so that I too can say, not my will, but let Your will be done, in Jesus name, Amen.
