Once you take possession of the land it will rest from war

Joshua blessed him. He gave Hebron to Caleb son of Jephunneh as an inheritance. Hebron belongs to Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite still today, because he gave himself totally to God, the God of Israel.

The name of Hebron used to be Kiriath Arba, named after Arba, the greatest man among the Anakim.

And the land had rest from war.

Joshua 14:13-15

Once Caleb took possession of Hebron, the land rested from war. This teaches us a number of important lessons:

  1. Before a breakthrough there will be a state of chaos

In our lives as believers in Jesus Christ, there will be times when before we breakthrough to the next dimension, everything that can go wrong, will go wrong. There will be a time of chaos and even confusion however this is not designed to defeat you, it is designed to promote you. You just have to resolve that by the strength of God you will breakthrough to your next level:

For by thee I have run through a troop; and by my God have I leaped over a wall.

Psalm 18:29

  1. The Promised Land is a place of total rest

You see, once we get to the Promised Land in the New Jerusalem, there will be no more tears and all the chaos of this present world will cease:

And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.

Revelation 21:4

  1. We can enter into the rest of The Lord even whilst on earth

Even here on earth there is a state of great peace that we can attain once we decide to give our lives to Jesus and obey His Words. This rest and peace comes when we trust The Lord and keep our minds steadfastly on Him knowing that He will never let us down:

Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.

Isaiah 26:3 (KJV)

Prayer

Dear Lord, please help me to fight to take possession of all the land that You have given me so that it will rest from war in Jesus name.

Those who follow The Lord will inherit the land – part 2

Hebron therefore became the inheritance of Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite to this day, because he wholly followed the Lord God of Israel.

Joshua 14:14

Last week we learned that Caleb inherited the land because he followed the Lord wholeheartedly. There are other useful lessons we can learn from the life of Caleb:

  1. You can achieve whatever you want regardless of your age

When Caleb had reached the age of 85 that is when he asked for his mountain. He was not concerned about his age, he was only concerned about the promises of God. We should never let old age stop us from doing what God has called us to do. Moses was 80 years old when God called him and he led the Children of Israel for 40 years until he died at 120 years old. Abraham was 75 years old when God called him. Therefore there is no reason why we should not fulfil the call of God upon our lives because of old age.

  1. You must rest assured that The Lord is with you

Caleb wanted the mountain because He knew that The Lord will be with him to drive out the giants. We must likewise be persuaded that The Lord will be with us and that whatever giant steps He allows us to take He will be with us:

Now therefore, give me this mountain of which the Lord spoke in that day; for you heard in that day how the Anakim were there, and that the cities were great and fortified. It may be that the Lord will be with me, and I shall be able to drive them out as the Lord said.”

Joshua 14:12

  1. We must keep ourselves physically strong

Caleb was ready to take the mountain because he was physically strong. In fact he told Joshua that he was as fit now at 85 years as he was when he was 40 years old (he was still strong enough for war). This tells us that Caleb must have been a man of exercise. It is important for us as children of God to exercise our body so that we can stay physically fit to do the work of God:

As yet I am as strong this day as on the day that Moses sent me; just as my strength was then, so now is my strength for war, both for going out and for coming in.

Joshua 14:11

Prayer

Dear Lord, please help me like Caleb not to be afraid of giants but to ask for the mountain and inherit the land in Jesus name.

Those who follow The Lord will inherit the Land – part 1

Hebron therefore became the inheritance of Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite to this day, because he wholly followed the Lord God of Israel.

Joshua 14:12

As Joshua was dividing the land among the tribes of Israel, Caleb approached Joshua and reminded him how Moses had promised to give him the land of Hebron because he had completely followed the Lord.

The story of Caleb teaches us a number of important lessons about what it takes for us to inherit the Promised Land:

  1. We must have a heart of faith concerning the promises of God

When Caleb and the rest of the 12 came back from spying the land, Caleb brought back a good report that they were able to take on the giants and to possess the land that God had promised them. Caleb “brought back word to him as it was in his heart” (Joshua 14:7). We must therefore have a heart of faith concerning the promises of God. We develop this heart of faith when we regularly read and meditate on the Word of God and listen to messages that will build up our faith. When we feast on the Word of God it will reflect in what we say:

A good person produces good things from the treasury of a good heart, and an evil person produces evil things from the treasury of an evil heart. What you say flows from what is in your heart.

Luke 6:45 (NLT)

  1. The land where our feet treads shall be ours

Moses had told Caleb that the land where his feet had trodden shall be his inheritance and his children forever because he had completely followed the Lord. Likewise when we follow the Lord, every land where our feet shall tread shall be ours:

I will give you every place where you set your foot, as I promised Moses.

Joshua 1:3 (NIV)

  1. We must demand the mountain

As humans we naturally want comfort and will do anything to avoid pain and hardship however this was not the attitude of Caleb. At the age of 85 years he was asking for the mountain. This teaches us that we should not settle for the valleys or the comfort zone because it doesn’t allow us to grow. When Abraham asked Lot to choose which part of the land he wanted, Lot settled for the valley, and look at what happened to Sodom and Gomorra?. We must reach out to the higher things in God:

Now therefore give me this mountain, whereof the LORD spake in that day; for thou heardest in that day how the Anakims were there, and that the cities were great and fenced: if so be the LORD will be with me, then I shall be able to drive them out, as the LORD said.

Joshua 14:12

Prayer

Dear Lord, please help me to follow You with my whole heart so that I too will inherit the Land in Jesus name.

Don’t worry about those who try to curse you

The children of Israel also killed with the sword Balaam the son of Beor, the soothsayer, among those who were killed by them.

Joshua 13:22 (NKJV)

In Numbers 22 we learn that when Balak saw how the Israelites had defeated the Amorites, he and the Moabites were very afraid. He therefore hired Balaam to curse the Israelites because they were too numerous and too strong for him. However Balaam could not curse Israel. Instead of cursing them he blessed them because he said he could not curse those whom God has blessed. This story teaches us a number of important lessons:

  1. When you are succeeding there will be people who will try to curse you

Balak decided to hire Balaam to curse Israel because they were too many and too strong for him to put down. When you pray and ask God for enlargement and He begins to enlarge your territory, Satan will influence people who are jealous to curse you. Jabez recognised this fact which is why when he prayed for God to enlarge him, he also asked The Lord to keep him from evil that it may not harm him:

And Jabez called on the God of Israel, saying, Oh that thou wouldest bless me indeed, and enlarge my coast, and that thine hand might be with me, and that thou wouldest keep me from evil, that it may not grieve me! And God granted him that which he requested.

1 Chronicles 4:10 (KJV)

  1. Their curse against you will be turned into a blessing

Today God wants you to know that you are blessed and that every curse against you will be turned into a blessing. Just like Balaam had no choice but to bless Israel, anybody who plans to curse you will end up blessing you.  Don’t worry because as long as you are living in obedience to God, no satanic plan or magic curse against you can ever prevail. The same way it did not work on Israel, it will not work on you:

Surely there is no enchantment against Jacob, neither is there any divination against Israel: according to this time it shall be said of Jacob and of Israel, What hath God wrought!

Numbers 23:23 (KJV)

  1. When Satan knows that he cannot curse you he will try to entice you to disobey God so that you can destroy yourself

When Balaam saw that he could not curse the Israelites, he advised Balak to entice the children of Israel to sin by eating things sacrificed to idols and to commit sexual immorality (Rev 2:14). You see, unless we repent, the consequences of sin is death:

For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Romans 6:23

  1. Those who dig a pit for you will fall into it themselves

Don’t worry about those plotting evil against you because those who have dug a pit for you to fall will fall into it themselves. We saw how Baalam eventually met with his doom under the hand of Joshua:

Whoever digs a pit will fall into it, and a stone will come back on him who starts it rolling.

Proverbs 26:27

  1. Stay obedient to the Word of God

When you obey God and do what He said you should do in His Word, anyone who comes against you will not succeed but will have to flee before you:

The LORD shall cause thine enemies that rise up against thee to be smitten before thy face: they shall come out against thee one way, and flee before thee seven ways.

Deuteronomy 28:7

Prayer

Dear Lord, I thank You that You have promised in Your Word that no curse will ever work against me. I pray that as You are blessing me You will keep me from all evil that it may not harm me in Jesus name.
