Faith makes a way

Thursday 22 June 2017

His lord said to him, “Well done, good and faithful servant; you were faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.”

Matthew 25:21

The importance of faith if a key concept in the Bible. Faith is the currency on which the Word of God was founded. Faith is crucial in order to have a relationship with God and to acquire the success that God has promised in His word.

1,Faith is essential to  progress

“And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.”

In Hebrews 11:6, we are reminded by God in the Bible that without faith we cannot please God. When we can be faithful with a few things, God then can bless us with the opportunity to be blessed with much more. If we want to progress to the next level e.g financial independence and achieve our financial goals, we need to first handle our current situations and master it.

2, God is a God of multiplication, change and transformation

In order to be faithful over a few things and then go onto rule many things, we need God’s assistance. God promises in His word to make us more like Christ and to order our footsteps (Psalms 119:133).

Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.

2 Corinthians 5:17

God removes old things to make the way for new things. In Galatians 5:23, we read of the fruits of the Spirit.  God equates success with faithfulness, joy, long suffering, peace, kindness, goodness and self control. God allows us to be successful through transforming our character and not always our financial circumstances. He promises to do a new thing in our life.

Do not remember the former things,
Nor consider the things of old.

Isaiah 43:18

Summary

In order to experience new things in our life we need to have faith and be expectant of change in line with Gods promises. We serve a God of multiplication, transformation and change who is more than able to assist us in mastering our current financial situation and circumstances. Once we do, He then promises to take us to more financial success.

How to be free from the worries of life and the lure of wealth

Now he who received seed among the thorns is he who hears the word, and the cares of this world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and he becomes unfruitful.

Matthew 13:22

In Matthew 13:22 we find that a man receives the word of God graciously and makes progress. He has faith and the word has root in him, however due to the things of the world such as riches, the benefits of the word are choked out of the man and he becomes unfruitful. The scripture above teaches us many life lessons.

1, We must meditate on the word day and night

The word is precious and has the power to allow us to live lives that are content, stable and balanced. In order to stay on course and allow the word of God to influence and guide our life, we need to meditate on the word day and night so that the word is not choked out of us, and so we do not fall and stumble and become unfruitful.

This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.

Joshua 1:8

For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

Hebrews 4:12

2, We must renew our minds on a daily basis

In order to remain fruitful in the word of God, the bible, we must renew our minds daily. Our minds are daily polluted by things we hear in passing conversation, on social media, in newspapers and through the radio etc. In order to not be influenced by the ways of the world we need to renew our minds through yielding to God and asking God to remove anything that hinders our fellowship with Him.

And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

Romans 12:2

3, We must rely upon God’s strength and not our own

We must not rely upon on own efforts but we must rely upon God’s grace to stay rooted to the word so we are not distracted by things of the word such as wealth. (Zechariah 4:6). In order to do this we need to renew our minds and focus on whatever ifs pure, good, true and worthy.

Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.

Philippians 4:8

Summary

When we renew our minds by Gods strength and not our own, and when we discipline our minds and make a conscious effort to meditate on the promises of God’s word, and resist sin, we are able to bear fruit and demonstrate to others the benefits of being obedient to the word of God, the Bible (Deuteronomy 7:9).

We must bind the strong man over our finances and take back our goods

Or how can one enter a strong man’s house and plunder his goods, unless he first binds the strong man? And then he will plunder his house.

Matthew 12:29

This scripture asks us how can anyone enter a strong man’s house and carry off his possessions unless he first ties up the strong man? Once the strong man is bound then we can plunder his house. In this case once we bind Satan the strong man we can take authority and plunder his influence over us. When Satan no longer has influence over us we can expect to prosper in all areas of our life including the area of financial stability.

1, Bind the strong man

The “strong man” is Satan who possesses, or works in human beings by means of his wicked spirits. Satan is as clearly a person as the Lord Jesus Christ is a Person! The Lord Jesus Christ dwells in those He redeems by His Spirit, Who imparts to them the very life of the Son of God, thus making them children of God. In the same way the prince of darkness has influence over the fallen race of Adam. Until we know how to take heed to the Lord’s warning and “FIRST bind the strong man,” the attempts we make to “spoil his goods” will only enrage him, and enable him to strengthen his armour, and guard his palace in peace. The strong man must be bound with authority in the name of Jesus.

2, Take authority over the strong man and demand what’s rightfully yours

In the authority we have in the name of Jesus we can tear down the strong man and bind his power from working in our life.

Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you.

Luke 10:19

We have the authority in the name of Jesus to have dominion over all the power of the enemy and take back what belongs to us. God promises us abundance. It’s God will that we live in authority, in accordance with God’s will for our life, and to live in financial abundance as a by product of that authority. John 10:10.

3, Walk in your authority over the strongman

Once we take authority over the strong man/enemy, in the name of Jesus, we can begin to live a life of abundance and expect to be blessed in all areas of our life. The bible reminds us that God gives us wisdom to acquire wealth.

And you shall remember the Lord your God, for it is He who gives you power to get wealth, that He may establish His covenant which He swore to your fathers, as it is this day.

Deuteronomy 8:18

Summary

God wants us to take authority over the enemy and then to plunder his house. We can only plunder the house of the enemy once we have bound the enemy. Once the enemy is bound we can expect to live in the promises of God and to live life’s of abundance. It is God’s will for us to proper in all areas of our life, including the financial arena. (Psalm 92:12

God knows all your needs

But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.

Matthew 6:33

God knows all your needs

God knows all our needs before we ask. God desires that we first and foremost put Him first then he promises He will take care of all or needs, both material, physical and emotional needs.

1, God knows all our needs

God knows all of our needs before we even ask (Matthew 6:8).  God also has His own needs. (Matthew 6:33). God’s need is that we first seek the kingdom of God then everything we desire will come to us. God is not a God of limitation or lack. Our God is a God of provision. It is God who gives us the wisdom to acquire wealth.  When we acknowledge God’s needs He supplies our needs.

And you shall remember the Lord your God, for it is He who gives you power to get wealth, that He may establish His covenant which He swore to your fathers, as it is this day.

Deuteronomy 8:18

2, God desires we put Him first

God is a God of provision. He desires good for us and is the supplier of every good gift (James 1:17). God had made provision through his living word the Bible for all our needs.

And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.

Philippians 4:19

In order for God to bless us in any capacity He desires that we have a relationship with Him first. He wants us to seek His kingdom first and then promises us that all other things will be added to us.

3, God is a God of principle

God is a God of principle and order. He is not the author of any confusion. God has set out clear guidelines so that we can be righteous before Him, so that He can bless us.

For God is not the author of confusion but of peace, as in all the churches of the saints.

1 Corinthians 14:33

One of God’s principles is that we live in obedience. This is an important principle to Him (1 Samuel 15:22.) God cautions us that He prefers obedience to sacrifice. In order to be blessed by God we need to get to know God and to acknowledge His guidelines. Another important principle to God is that we flee from sin.

Your iniquities have turned these things away,
And your sins have withheld good from you.

Jeremiah 5:25

Summary

God has blessed us with many promises that are yes and amen provided we are righteous before God and have the faith of a mustard seed to activate His power.  We can live a blessed life in all areas including our finances provided we put God’s kingdom and His righteousness first.  In doing so  we can acknowledge His sovereignty and can lay claim to His promises and power.

Hallmarks of Great Leaders: Part 3

So Joshua did to them as the Lord had told him: he hamstrung their horses and burned their chariots with fire.

As the Lord had commanded Moses his servant, so Moses commanded Joshua, and so Joshua did. He left nothing undone of all that the Lord had commanded Moses.

Joshua 11:9,15 (NKJV)

We can learn several lessons about the hallmarks of great leaders from the life of Joshua:

  1. To have success and victory as a leader we must believe God

Joshua had much success as a leader because he believed every word of God. To believe God is to have confidence in what He says. When you believe God He will establish you:

Believe in the LORD your God, so shall ye be established; believe his prophets, so shall ye prosper.

2 Chronicles 20:20 (KJV)

  1. To have success as a leader we must obey God

Joshua obeyed and did all that God told him to do. Likewise if we want to have success we too must learn to overcome our fears of ‘what if’, and do what God has told us to do.

  1. To have success and victory we must obey those God has put in charge of us

Joshua did all that Moses, the man of God, had commanded him to do as if it was God that told him to do it. Likewise if we want success we too must learn to obey those that God has put in charge of us. We are exhorted to:

Obey your spiritual leaders, and do what they say. Their work is to watch over your souls, and they are accountable to God. Give them reason to do this with joy and not with sorrow. That would certainly not be for your benefit.

Hebrews 13:17 (NLT)

Prayer

Dear Lord, please give me an obedient heart to obey You in everything I do in Jesus name, amen.

Leaders don’t lead alone, they surround themselves with other leaders

Early the next morning Joshua gathered the men together. Then Joshua and the leaders of Israel led the men to Ai

Joshua 8:10 (ERV)

When it was time to conquer the city of Ai, Joshua did not lead the men alone, instead he and the leaders of Israel led the men to Ai. This teaches another important lesson about leadership; leaders don’t lead alone, they surround themselves with other leaders.

When Joshua’s predecessor, the great Prophet Moses assumed the mantle of leadership, he did not understand the principles of leadership; he thought he could lead the people alone.

So he would sit from morning until night judging the people. When Jethro, Moses’ father in-law visited him and saw this, he was shocked and asked Moses why he was the only one judging the people.

Jethro counselled Moses to be wise and to choose men to lead with him who are able, who respect God, men who will not change their decisions for money.

He advised Moses to find such men and make them rulers over the people. He explained that there should be rulers over 1000 people, 100 people, 50 people, and even over ten people. Moses was to let these rulers judge the people.

If there was a very important case, then they could come to Moses and let him decide what to do. But they could decide the other cases themselves. In this way these men will share his work with him, and it will be easier for him to lead the people. If he did it this way then he would be able to do his job without tiring himself out.

Moses was a humble leader, so he listened to the counsel of Jethro. He chose good men from among the Israelites and he made them leaders over the people (Exodus 18).

Jesus Christ Who is our example, did not do all that the Father sent Him to do alone. When He was on earth, He chose 12 ordinary men to be His disciples. He invested His time in them and trained them so that they could carry on and do even greater works than He did (John 14:12). As believers in Jesus we are His body through which He still saves, heals, and delivers humanity (1 Corinthians 12:27, Mark 16:15-18).

We learn from both Jesus Christ and Joshua that as leaders, we should always be on the lookout for other leaders to surround ourselves with, whom we can train to share the mantle of leadership with, as well as to equip to lead when we are no longer around.

Prayer

Dear Father, please help me to surround myself with men and women who are able, who fear God, men and women of truth, who hate covetousness so that they can share the mantle of leadership with me. Please help me to invest in such people and train them so that they can carry on with the work You have entrusted in my hands in Jesus name, amen.

Once sin is removed from our lives, God will give us the victory

Then you shall rise from the ambush and seize the city, for the Lord your God will deliver it into your hand.

Joshua 8:7 (ERV)

It was only after Joshua, the leader, dealt with sin in the camp, that God told him not to be afraid, but to take all of the people of war with him and go up to Ai because He had already given into his hand the king of Ai, and his people, and his city, and his land.

In today’s Scripture, Joshua was giving the men of war the battle strategy that God had given him. The strategy was quite simple; some men were to hide behind the city, then Joshua and his men will approach the city and then Joshua and his men would run away as they were being chased by the men of Ai. Once they had come away from the city, the men who were hiding behind were to rise from the ambush and capture the city. Joshua assured them they will have the victory because the Lord has already delivered the city into their hand.

This story teaches us several important lessons about how sin affects our lives:

  1. Sin separates us from God and gives the enemy the upper hand over believers

Isaiah declares that it is our sins that have separated us from God and our sins has hidden God’s face from us so that He will not hear (Isaiah 59:1-2).

Sin also gives the enemy, who is Satan, an upper hand over believers. We can see through the story of Joshua, the High Priest, that Satan was able to stand at his right hand to resists him because he was clothed with filthy garment which represents sin (Zechariah 3:1-5).

Sin also causes sickness and brings grief into the life of the believer. When Jesus was on earth, often times before healing people He would first forgive their sins, and after healing them, He would tell them to go and sin no more, so that a worse thing will not come on them (Matthew 9:2-5, Mark 2:5, Luke 5:20-24, John 5:14, John 8:11).

  1. Once sin is removed from our lives, God will give us the victory

There is only one consequence of sin, which is death:

For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Romans 6:23

Under Joshua’s leadership, Achan and his whole family had to pay for the consequence of their sin, which was death. Joshua could not bear their sins for them.

Thank God for Jesus that He came to earth to deal with the problem of sin. He came as the Lamb of God to take away the sin of the world (John 1:29).

Under the Lordship of Jesus Christ, the sinner can come to Jesus, repent of our sins and have all of our sins washed in His own blood so that we can be made righteous before God. Jesus came to destroy the works of the enemy so that Satan can no longer have the upper hand over us:

But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

1 Corinthians 15:57

Prayer

Dear Father, I come to You now in the name of Jesus and by the Blood of Jesus. Please help me to overcome every secret sin in my life through the power of Your Holy Spirit so that I can have the victory through Jesus Christ my Lord.

God wants our firstfruits offering

Then the Lord said to Joshua, “Don’t be afraid; don’t give up. Lead all your fighting men to Ai. I will help you defeat the king of Ai. I am giving you his people, his city, and his land. You will do to Ai and its king the same thing you did to Jericho and its king. Only this time you can take all the wealth and animals and keep it for yourselves. You will share the wealth with your people. Now, tell some of your soldiers to hide behind the city.”

Joshua 8:1-2 (ERV)

Last week, we learnt that when Achan brought the accursed things from Jericho, it brought a curse into the camp therefore the Children of Israel could not stand up against their enemies because God did not go out to battle with them.

In today’s Scripture, God was instructing Joshua on how to defeat Ai however, His commands this time was different. God told Joshua that this time when they defeat Ai, he was to share the wealth with the people. You will recall that for Jericho God wanted them to give Him everything which is why He instructed them not to keep anything for themselves.

You see, Jericho was the first city that they conquered and God had already instructed the Children of Israel that the first of everything, including their children belongs to Him (Exodus 13:12 / Leviticus 23:9-14). The Bible tells us that we should honour God with the firstfruits, or the best, of all our increase:

Honor the Lord with your possessions, and with the firstfruits of all your increase; so your barns will be filled with plenty, and your vats will overflow with new wine.

(Proverbs 3:9-10).

God Himself gave us His very best in the person of His Son, Jesus Christ, who became our firstfruits offering when He died and was the first to be raised from the dead (1 Corinthians 15:23).

This story from Joshua shows that God wants us to give Him the very best of everything.

How can we honour God with our firstfruits offering?

We can give God the very best in the following areas:

  1. Grateful heart

We can honour God by having a grateful heart and giving Him thanks for all that He has done for us:

Giving thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ (Ephesians 5:20)

  1. Time

Time is a precious commodity that we cannot get back once it is lost. We can give God the best part of our time by spending time in His presence. Jesus says He is standing at the door of our heart and is knocking. If we will hear His voice and open the door, He will come in and dine with us (Revelation 3:20). We are also told that those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength (Isaiah 40:31).

3. Prayer

Prayer is basically talking to God and Him talking back to you. It is so powerful that it is described as an incense that goes up to the Throne room of God in Heaven (Psalm 141:2 / Revelation 8:4). We are told to pray without ceasing (1 Thessalonians 5:17).

Throughout history, men and woman who have been used by God powerfully all understood the power of prayer. Martin Luther, the German theologian whose writings inspired the Protestant Reformation, is quoted as saying:

“I have so much to do that I shall spend the first three hours in prayer.” – Martin Luther

  1. Possessions

We can honour God by giving Him the best of our substance, whatever that may be, whether it is money, cars, houses, clothes, grain harvest etc. What matters is that we give it willingly with a grateful heart:

So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver

(2 Corinthians 9:7)

One way we can give to God is to give to the poor because we are told that when we give to the poor we are lending to God (Proverbs 19:17).

  1. Talent

In the parable of the talent, we learn that the servant who was given five talents and doubled it was given the talent of the servant who was only given the one talent who because of fear buried his talent (Matthew 25:14-30). This story shows that it honours God when we use and develop all the talents and gifts that He has given us.

Prayer

Dear Father, today I surrender my life to You. I choose to honour You with the best of everything I have. I thank You for the talents and gifts and potential that You have placed inside of me. Dear Lord, please give me wisdom to discover and to use them for Your glory in Jesus name, amen.

Deliverance, Joy, Lightness, Strength, Victory

What are the effects of joy?

In my last blog we looked at what joy is. Today, we will be looking at the effects of joy:

1. Strength – strength in your spirit, in your mind and in your body

Then he said unto them, Go your way, eat the fat, and drink the sweet, and send portions unto them for whom nothing is prepared: for this day is holy unto our Lord: neither be ye sorry; for the joy of the Lord is your strength.

Nehemiah 8:10

2. Feeling of lightness – the Bible tells us that the Jews felt light as a result of their deliverance from Haman

The Jews had light and gladness, joy and honor

Esther 8:16

3. Victory and Deliverance comes through joy – when we rejoice ourselves in the Lord. The Lord wants us to be a people of joy, not sadness. Whether we are alone in our homes or we are gathered together with other believers, we should be singing and dancing unto the Lord. As we do this we gain strength and all the chains that the enemy has around us is broken:

Let the saints be joyful in glory;

Let them sing aloud on their beds.

Let the high praises of God be in their mouth,

And a two-edged sword in their hand,

To execute vengeance on the nations,

And punishments on the peoples;

To bind their kings with chains,

And their nobles with fetters of iron;

To execute on them the written judgment—

This honor have all His saints.

Praise the Lord!

Psalm 149:5-9

What are the effects of joy:

1. Joy gives us strength

2. Joy makes us light

3. Joy brings us victory and deliverance
