Do good to others when you can

Do good to others when you can

Do not withhold good from those who deserve it when it’s in your power to help them.

If you can help your neighbor now, don’t say, “Come back tomorrow, and then I’ll help you.”

Proverbs 3:27-28 (NLT)

The scriptures above tells us not to withhold good from those who deserve it when we have the power to help. Why is it important do good to others when you can?

  1. What you sow you will reap

It is a spiritual law that whatever you sow that is what you will reap. If you sow kindness in the lives of others, you will also reap kindness. Even if you don’t receive the reward in your life time, your children and grandchildren will reap the harvest:

Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.

Galatians 6:7 (KJV)

  1. When you help the poor you are lending to the Lord

When you help the poor who are not able to repay you, you are lending it to the Lord and in due season the Lord will pay you back:

If you help the poor, you are lending to the LORD–and He will repay you!

Proverbs 19:17 (NLT)

  1. When you bless others you are doing it unto the Lord

When we help those in need, we are not just doing it unto them but we are doing it unto our Lord Jesus Christ and He will reward us on the day of judgement:

Then the King will say to those on His right hand, ‘Come, you blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: for I was hungry and you gave Me food; I was thirsty and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in; I was naked and you clothed Me; I was sick and you visited Me; I was in prison and you came to Me.’

Matthew 25:34-36

Prayer

Dear Lord, please help me to do good to others when it is in my power to, because I know I am doing it unto You in Jesus name.

Why should you accept the Lord’s discipline?

Wednesday 21 June 2017

My child, don’t reject the Lord’s discipline, and don’t be upset when he corrects you.

For the Lord corrects those he loves, just as a father corrects a child in whom He delights.

Proverbs 3:11-12 (NLT)

Being disciplined is not a pleasant experience however we are being encouraged not to be upset when we experience it. Why is it important to accept discipline?

1, The Lord disciplines those He loves

Just as a natural father correct a child that he loves, God also corrects us because He loves us. If we accept God as our Father then we must accept the discipline that the Father gives to His children:

And have you forgotten the encouraging words God spoke to you as His children? He said, “My child, don’t make light of the Lord’s discipline, and don’t give up when He corrects you. For the Lord disciplines those He loves, and He punishes each one He accepts as His child.”

Hebrews 12:5-6 (NLT)

2, Discipline helps you to stay on the right track

The Lord’s discipline helps us to stay on the right track, which is why David said it was good for him to be afflicted. Affliction helps us to come back to the Lord and to obey the word of the Lord:

It was good for me to be afflicted so that I might learn your decrees.

Psalm 119:71 (NIV)

3, Discipline produces a fruit of righteousness in our lives

In the moment when we are being disciplined it seems painful, but later it helps us to live right in the sight of God:

No discipline is enjoyable while it is happening–it’s painful! But afterward there will be a peaceful harvest of right living for those who are trained in this way.

Hebrews 12:11 (NLT)

Prayer

Dear Lord, please help me to accept Your discipline knowing that You correct those you love in Jesus name.

Why we must honour our parents

Wednesday 8 February

Why must we honour our parents?

My child, listen when your father corrects you.

Don’t neglect your mother’s instruction.

Proverbs 1:8 (NLT)

Wisdom is telling us in today’s text to listen to our Father when he corrects us, and to our mother when she instructs us. We must remember that parents here is not only referring to our natural parents, it also refers to our spiritual parents in the Lord.

Why does God tell us to honour our parents both in the Old and New Testament?

1, Honouring our parents pleases the Lord

Firstly when we honour our parents, it brings honour to God and it pleases Him.

Children, obey your parents in all things, for this is well pleasing to the Lord.

Colossians 3:20 (NKJV)

  1. Honouring our parents prolongs our lives

The second reason why we must honour parents is so that we will have a long life here on earth:

“Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the Lord your God is giving you.

Exodus 20:12 (NKJV)

  1. Honouring our parents brings blessings

The third reason is that when we honour our parents it will go well with us:

Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right. Honour thy father and mother; which is the first commandment with promise; That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth.

Ephesians 6:1-3 (KJV)

Prayer

Dear Lord, please help me to honour my parents in the Lord so that it will go well with me and I will live long on the earth to fulfil my purpose in life in Jesus name.

How we live our lives can affect an entire generation

Did not Achan the son of Zerah commit a trespass in the accursed thing, and wrath fell on all the congregation of Israel? And that man did not perish alone in his iniquity.

Joshua 22:20

When Achan sinned by taking of the accursed things, he probably thought that he was doing no harm to anybody, but in fact he was wrong. His sins affected the whole of the Children of Israel. They lost the battle in Ai and 36 men died as a result. This story teaches us important lessons about our own lives:

  1. Sin affects not only us but our children

Even though it was Achan alone who sinned, his wife and children and all that he had including even his animals were destroyed. We likewise need to be mindful that the way we live our lives affects not only us but our children and grandchildren after us:

The LORD is slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, forgiving iniquity and transgression, but He will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, to the third and the fourth generation.

Numbers 14:18 (ESV)

  1. Sin affects our community

Achan’s sin di not only affect him and his family but it affected the whole community. Likewise the way we live our lives affects our community, including our neighbourhoods, congregations, schools, work places, etc. The Bible tells us that whatever is done in private will be revealed in public and this also applies to sin. Even though it may be committed in private it still has wider consequences:

For all that is secret will eventually be brought into the open, and everything that is concealed will be brought to light and made known to all.

Luke 8:17 (NLT)

  1. Sin affects our nations

Achan’s sins affected the whole nation of Israel, however there is also hope because God assures us that if we will humble ourselves and pray and turn from our wicked ways, He will forgive our sins and heal our lands:

If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.

2 Chronicles 7:14 (KJV)

Prayer

Dear Lord, I know that You are a loving God and slow to anger, however please help me not to take Your love for granted but to live my life in such a way that I will leave a Godly inheritance for my children in Jesus name, amen.
