How do we develop a sound heart?

A sound heart is life to the body,

But envy is rottenness to the bones.

Proverbs 14:30 (NKJV)

A sound heart is very important because out of it proceed the issues of life. The question today is, how do we develop a sound heart?

  1. Deal with issues that arise in your heart

We must acknowledge that things are in our heart that is not always pleasant. The Bible says that the human heart is desperately wicked (Jeremiah 17:9). Therefore when wicked thoughts comes into the heart, we must not think it strange and neither should we try to suppress it. We need to instead run to the Lord to ask Him to help us deal with the issues in our heart:

Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts:

And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.

Psalm 139:23-24 (KJV)

  1. Remove unforgiveness from your heart

There are certain things we do that does not allow us to have a sound heart. One of them is harbouring unforgiveness in our hearts. We must daily ask the Lord to search us and see if there is any unforgiveness in our hearts because unforgivenesss will block us from enjoying a sound heart:

“And whenever you stand praying, if you have anything against anyone, forgive him, that your Father in heaven may also forgive you your trespasses.

Mark 11:25 (NKJV)

  1. Remove bitterness from our hearts

When we refuse to forgive, it can lead to bitterness developing in our hearts which acts like a cancer. Bitterness will prevent us from enjoying all the benefits and privileges that God has set for us:

Look after each other so that none of you fails to receive the grace of God. Watch out that no poisonous root of bitterness grows up to trouble you, corrupting many.

Dear Lord, please help me to guard my heart for out of it comes the issues of life in Jesus name.

The words we speak are very powerful. The Bible is very clear about the kinds of words that we should speak as believers in Jesus Christ:

  1. Speak words of excellence

Our words must be filled with excellence which means that we must think carefully about them, before we actually speak them. For us to speak of excellent things, we must think about things that are excellent:

Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.

Philippians 4:8 (NIV)

  1. Speak the truth

Speaking the truth from a sincere heart is what God expects from us. It’s not always easy and there are times that we may be tempted to tell lies, however we are encouraged to speak the truth at all times:

Who may worship in your sanctuary, Lord? Who may enter your presence on your holy hill? Those who lead blameless lives and do what is right, speaking the truth from sincere hearts.

Psalm 15:1-2 (NLT)

  1. Speak words of righteousness

We must speak words that are right. In other words, if we know that the words we are about to speak are not right and will not build someone up, we must avoid them all together:

The mouth of the righteous man utters wisdom, and his tongue speaks what is just.

Psalm 37:30 (NIV)

  1. Avoid speaking perverse words

Perverse words are words that are crooked and twisted , and we are encouraged not to speak such words:

Avoid all perverse talk; stay away from corrupt speech.

Proverbs 4:24 (NLT)

Dear Lord, please help me to only speak excellent things in 2018 in Jesus΄ name.

How do you protect your heart?

Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life

Proverbs 4:23

 

Guarding your heart is of paramount importance because it determines the course of your life. How do you guard your heart?

1, Keep your heart free from sin

We must recognize that the human heart is desperately wicked (Jeremiah 17:9) and is inclined to sin, therefore to have a heart free from sin we must ask the Lord to create in us a clean heart and renew a right spirit in us:

Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.

Psalm 51:10 (KJV)

2, Keep your heart free from envy

To protect our heart, we must keep it free from envy and jealousy because these are emotions that destroys the heart like cancer:

A peaceful heart leads to a healthy body; jealousy is like cancer in the bones.

Proverbs 14:30 (NLT)

3, Keep the heart free from unforgiveness

To protect our heart we must keep it free from unforgiveness and be quick to forgive others so that our heavenly Father will also forgive us:

“If you forgive those who sin against you, your heavenly Father will forgive you.

Matthew 6:14 (NLT)

4, Keep it free from pride

To protect our heart we must keep it free from pride and remain humble no matter how high God lifts us up:

Everyone proud in heart is an abomination to the Lord; Though they join forces, none will go unpunished.

Proverbs 16:5

Prayer

Dear Lord, please help me to protect my heart and keep it free from sin, jealousy, unforgiveness and pride in Jesus name, amen.

What is the secret of obtaining favor with God and people Part 2

Never let loyalty and kindness leave you! Tie them around your neck as a reminder. Write them deep within your heart.Then you will find favor with both God and people, and you will earn a good reputation.

Proverbs 3:3-4 (NLT)

Last week, we learned that to obtain favor with God and people, we must be loyal, kind, respect God and believe in Jesus Christ. Today we will explore three more secrets to obtaining favor:

  1. Be humble

Humility is having a deep sense of one’s (moral) littleness; modesty, and lowliness of mind. It is being aware that we are nothing without the grace of God upon our lives and therefore having total dependence on God. When we humble ourselves we will obtain favor from God:

Toward the scorners He is scornful, but to the humble He gives favor.

Proverbs 3:34 (ESV) 

  1. Seek God’s favor

God says we will find Him when we seek Him with all of our heart. Therefore as we develop a relationship with Him, we can, like the Psalmist ask God to shower us with His favor:

Remember me, O Lord, when You show favor to Your people; help me when You save them

Psalm 106: 4 (ESV)

  1. Seek God’s Kingdom first

When we put God first in everything we do, and seek for the establishment of His kingdom here on earth, He gives us other things that we did not ask for including favor:

But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and His righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

Matthew 6:33 (KJV)

Prayer

Dear Lord, please remember me when You show favor to Your people; help me when You save them in Jesus name.

Why is it important to be kind?

Proverbs 3:3 (NLT)  

There are two virtues that we told in Proverbs 3:3 that should never leave us, loyalty and kindness. Today we want to examine why it is so important to be kind.

 

1, When you sow kindness you will reap kindness

The Bible tells us that we will always reap what we sow (Galatians 6:7). Therefore when you sow kindness you too will reap kindness:

Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.

Ephesians 4:32 (ESV)

2, Kindness is an act of love

When you are kind, it shows that you are obeying the first commandment of the Lord which is to love the Lord our God and to love our neighbor as ourselves:

Jesus replied, “‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. A second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’

Matthew 22:37-39 (NLT)

3, Kindness is a fruit of the Spirit

Kindness is one of the fruit of the Spirit that we as believers should produce in our lives:

But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things!

Galatians 5:22-23 (NLT)

 

Prayer

Dear Lord, please help me to be kind. Help me to help other people who are in need and sow acts of kindness in other people’s lives in Jesus name.

How do we become people of integrity?

For only the godly will live in the land, and those with integrity will remain in it.

Proverbs 2:21 (NLT)

We are told that the godly will dwell in the land and those with integrity will remain in it. So the question today is, how do we become people of integrity?

1, Keep to your word

To be a person of integrity is to be a person that keeps your word even when it is not convenient. It is easy to make a commitment however sometimes keeping them is very difficult, but a person with integrity will do what they said even if it’s not convenient:

Those who despise flagrant sinners, and honor the faithful followers of the LORD, and keep their promises even when it hurts.

Psalm 15:4

2, Be honest

Honesty is a true test of integrity. When you are honest it means that you tell the truth even if it doesn’t suit you. We are told to let our yes be yes and our no be no (Matthew 5:37):

Who may worship in your sanctuary, Lord? Who may enter your presence on your holy hill? Those who lead blameless lives and do what is right, speaking the truth from sincere hearts.

Prayer

Dear Lord, please help me to be a person of integrity. Help me to keep to my word and to be honest in everything I do in Jesus name.

Don’t be afraid of your enemies, it is the Lord who hardens their heart so He can destroy them

For it was of the Lord to harden their hearts, that they should come against Israel in battle, that He might utterly destroy them, and that they might receive no mercy, but that He might destroy them, as the Lord had commanded Moses.

Joshua 11:20 (NKJV)

The scripture above tells us that it is The Lord that hardened the hearts of the neighbouring cities that they should come against Israel in battle. This teaches us a number of important lessons about our battles in life:

  1. Don’t be afraid of your enemies

You see, as Children of God, there is nothing that escapes Him about our lives. He knows the spiritual giants that have set themselves up against us, He is very aware of them however He wants us to be courageous and not to be afraid of them. That is why He assures that:

You shall not be afraid of the terror by night,

Nor of the arrow that flies by day,

Nor of the pestilence that walks in darkness,

Nor of the destruction that lays waste at noonday.

A thousand may fall at your side,

And ten thousand at your right hand;

But it shall not come near you.

Psalm 91:5-7

  1. It is the Lord that hardens the heart of your enemies

When you keep praying about a specific problem and it doesn’t seem to go straightaway, please do not give up, but realise that it is God that has hardened the hearts of your enemies. You see, champions are only made after they have defeated their opponents. Even though your enemies are determined to gather against you, The Lord has assured us that all who come against you shall fall for your sake:

Behold, they shall surely gather together, but not by me: whosoever shall gather together against thee shall fall for thy sake.

Isaiah 54:15 (KJV)

  1. God hardens your enemies hearts so that He can destroy them

God is determined to destroy all the spiritual giants that come against you. Because the time for judging Satan and his wicked hosts is yet to come, God is determined to destroy their influence in the lives of those who surrender their lives to Jesus Christ so that we can fulfil His plans and purpose for our lives. He wants to give us the victory however that victory only comes when we totally surrender our lives to Jesus:

But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

1 Corinthians 15:57

Prayer

Dear Father, please help me not to be afraid of my enemies, because I understand that it is You who hardens their heart so You can destroy them in Jesus name.

How do you overcome pride?

All the kings on the west side of the Jordan heard about this, including those in the highlands, the lowlands, and along the entire coast of the Mediterranean Sea toward Lebanon. They were Hittites and Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites. They formed an alliance to fight Joshua and Israel.

Last week, we saw that the first type of emotion that will confront you when God tells you to do something is fear. Once you get over the fear that was holding you back and you begin to succeed in that assignment, the next evil spirit that you will have to confront and defeat is pride.

Amorites – spirits of pride

Amorite means, “mountain dwellers; renowned, publicity, prominence”. Since mountains refer to tall and impressive land masses that dominate over valleys, we can infer that the Amorite spirit is a spirit of self-exaltation. The word for Amorite in Hebrew comes from another Hebrew word, amar, which means, “to utter, say”; this implies that people with Amorite spirits are people who want to be prominent and want their name uttered or mentioned.

Amorites are fame-seekers, seekers of human glory and greatness. Just as mountains tend to dominate over the landscape they are in, Amorites are people who like to dominate and rule over others. They tend to establish an imposing and seemingly immovable presence[1].

Anytime The Lord begins to bless you and gives you success in your area of assignment, you must watch out for pride because it will try to creep in. We need to know how to overcome pride because God is opposed to the proud but He gives grace to the lowly (James 4:6).

How do you overcome pride?

The Bible tells us that the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds. Below is a list of some of those weapons we can use to overcome pride:

  1. Do not entertain proud thoughts

Before the fall of Lucifer who became Satan, he said within his heart that he will ascend to the heavens; raise his throne above the stars of God (wanted prominence); and “I will make myself like the Most High” (Isaiah 14:13-14). Therefore he had sinned in his heart even before he carried out his rebellion against God.

Pride begins in the heart therefore we must capture every proud thought that raises itself against what the Word of God says and make it give up and obey Christ (2 Corinthians 10:4-6).

When the thought of pride comes, you must recognise that it is not of God therefore do not entertain it by dwelling on it, but stop it, tell it that it must go in Jesus name and instead focus your mind on thinking thoughts that are true, noble, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent or praiseworthy (Philippians 4:8);

  1. Ask God to give you a humble spirit

We must come daily to The Lord in prayer and ask Him to remove the heart of stone and give us a heart of flesh (Ezekiel 36:26); a heart that is gentle and humble, a heart like Jesus (Matthew 11:29);

  1. Ask The Lord to continuously search you and show you your heart

It’s easy to assume that we are walking in humility however like David we too should ask The Lord daily to search us and know our hearts, try us and know our thoughts and see if there is any wickedness of pride in our hearts and lead us to the right path (Psalm 139:23-24);

  1. Give God all the glory and recognise that you can do nothing without His grace;

We must recognise that it is by the grace of God upon our lives that we are what we are (1 Corinthians 15:10). This should keep us humble knowing that we can do nothing without God and all that we have (being alive, our health, family, gifts, talents, jobs, ministry, business etc.) is by the grace of God that is with us. If we are mindful of this then even when we receive praise from men we would not let it get to our head but would instead give God all the praise and glory for what He has done (Psalm 105:1);

  1. Spend time with wise people

Proverbs 27:17 tells us that iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend. To remain humble, it is important to spend time with wise friends and people we can give an account to, who will in a lovely way correct us when we are wrong.

Prayer

Dear Lord, I know You are against the proud, but You are kind to the humble. I recognise that sometimes my heart is proud therefore please give me a new heart and put a new spirit in me; remove from me the heart of pride and give me a gentle and humble heart in Jesus name.
