How can we stay free from the greed for money?

Wednesday 15th February 2017

Such is the fate of all who are greedy for money; it robs them of life.

Proverbs 1:15-19

In the above Scripture we are told that greed for money robs the owners of their lives. So the question is, how can we stay free from greed for money?

  1. Recognise that you are blessed to be a blessing to others

Greed for money will make you do things that you would otherwise not do, however when you recognise that God has blessed you with finances so that you can be a blessing to others it totally frees you from the desire to hoard money without sharing:

The Lord had said to Abram, “Leave your native country, your relatives, and your father’s family, and go to the land that I will show you. I will make you into a great nation. I will bless you and make you famous, and you will be a blessing to others.

Genesis 12:1-2 (NLT)

  1. Make the Kingdom of God your priority

When you find a cause bigger than yourself, it frees you from the greed or love of money because you will recognise that the money is not only meant for you, but it can be used as a tool to bless your family, community, Church, etc.

For example if you make the Kingdom of God your priority, you will want to spend your money on things that will bring glory to God, such as supporting missions, just like the women who supported Jesus and His disciples:

Joanna, the wife of Chuza, Herod’s business manager; Susanna; and many others who were contributing from their own resources to support Jesus and His disciples.

Luke 8:3 (NLT)

  1. Recognise that when you give to the poor you are lending to the Lord

When you give to the poor, we are told that you are lending to the Lord and He will pay you back. This should help us to avoid hoarding all our financial blessings to ourselves because we know that there will always be poor people around us to bless with our money:

If you help the poor, you are lending to the LORD–and He will repay you!

Proverbs 19:17 (NLT)

Prayer

Dear Lord, please bless me so that I can be a blessing to others in Jesus name.

Why is it important to keep on learning?

Wednesday 1 February 2017

A wise man will hear and increase learning,

And a man of understanding will attain wise counsel

Proverbs 1:5

We are told in Proverbs that the wise person love to learn, so why is it important to keep learning?

  1. When you learn you become wise

The first reason why it is important to keep on learning is that it will make you wiser. Proverbs 1:5 tells us that a wise person will learn and become wiser. Therefore if you want to become wiser you should never stop learning.

When the Apostle Paul was writing to Timothy and asking him to come and visit him, he especially requested that among other things he brings his books with him. This suggests to us that Paul was always learning:

When I was in Troas, I left my coat there with Carpus. So when you come, bring it to me. Also, bring my books. The books written on parchment are the ones I need.

2 Timothy 4:13 (ERV)

  1. Learning from others will inspire you to life an extraordinary life

When God calls you to do something extraordinary with your life, it may seem daunting at first, however if you will read books from other people in history who have done extraordinary things with their lives, you too will realise that nothing is impossible. This is why it is so important to read about the heroes of the Bible as well as biographies of contemporary people who have done extraordinary things:

Keep putting into practice all you learned and received from me—everything you heard from me and saw me doing. Then the God of peace will be with you.

Philippians 4:9 (NLT)

  1. Learning will make you an expert in your field

It is estimated that if you will spend one hour a day reading around your subject area you will become an expert in that field within 10 years, therefore learning is key if you want to excel in your God-given assignment:

Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

2 Timothy 2:15

Prayer

Dear Lord, please help me to have a continuous love of learning in Jesus name.

How we live our lives can affect an entire generation

Did not Achan the son of Zerah commit a trespass in the accursed thing, and wrath fell on all the congregation of Israel? And that man did not perish alone in his iniquity.

Joshua 22:20

When Achan sinned by taking of the accursed things, he probably thought that he was doing no harm to anybody, but in fact he was wrong. His sins affected the whole of the Children of Israel. They lost the battle in Ai and 36 men died as a result. This story teaches us important lessons about our own lives:

  1. Sin affects not only us but our children

Even though it was Achan alone who sinned, his wife and children and all that he had including even his animals were destroyed. We likewise need to be mindful that the way we live our lives affects not only us but our children and grandchildren after us:

The LORD is slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, forgiving iniquity and transgression, but He will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, to the third and the fourth generation.

Numbers 14:18 (ESV)

  1. Sin affects our community

Achan’s sin di not only affect him and his family but it affected the whole community. Likewise the way we live our lives affects our community, including our neighbourhoods, congregations, schools, work places, etc. The Bible tells us that whatever is done in private will be revealed in public and this also applies to sin. Even though it may be committed in private it still has wider consequences:

For all that is secret will eventually be brought into the open, and everything that is concealed will be brought to light and made known to all.

Luke 8:17 (NLT)

  1. Sin affects our nations

Achan’s sins affected the whole nation of Israel, however there is also hope because God assures us that if we will humble ourselves and pray and turn from our wicked ways, He will forgive our sins and heal our lands:

If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.

2 Chronicles 7:14 (KJV)

Prayer

Dear Lord, I know that You are a loving God and slow to anger, however please help me not to take Your love for granted but to live my life in such a way that I will leave a Godly inheritance for my children in Jesus name, amen.
