Why should you accept the Lord’s discipline?

Wednesday 21 June 2017

My child, don’t reject the Lord’s discipline, and don’t be upset when he corrects you.

For the Lord corrects those he loves, just as a father corrects a child in whom He delights.

Proverbs 3:11-12 (NLT)

Being disciplined is not a pleasant experience however we are being encouraged not to be upset when we experience it. Why is it important to accept discipline?

1, The Lord disciplines those He loves

Just as a natural father correct a child that he loves, God also corrects us because He loves us. If we accept God as our Father then we must accept the discipline that the Father gives to His children:

And have you forgotten the encouraging words God spoke to you as His children? He said, “My child, don’t make light of the Lord’s discipline, and don’t give up when He corrects you. For the Lord disciplines those He loves, and He punishes each one He accepts as His child.”

Hebrews 12:5-6 (NLT)

2, Discipline helps you to stay on the right track

The Lord’s discipline helps us to stay on the right track, which is why David said it was good for him to be afflicted. Affliction helps us to come back to the Lord and to obey the word of the Lord:

It was good for me to be afflicted so that I might learn your decrees.

Psalm 119:71 (NIV)

3, Discipline produces a fruit of righteousness in our lives

In the moment when we are being disciplined it seems painful, but later it helps us to live right in the sight of God:

No discipline is enjoyable while it is happening–it’s painful! But afterward there will be a peaceful harvest of right living for those who are trained in this way.

Hebrews 12:11 (NLT)

Prayer

Dear Lord, please help me to accept Your discipline knowing that You correct those you love in Jesus name.

Why you should honor the Lord

Wednesday 14 June 2017

Why should you honor the Lord with your wealth?

Honor the Lord with your wealth and the first part of your harvest. Then your barns will be full of grain, and your barrels will be overflowing with wine.

Proverbs 3:9-10 (ERV)

We are being encouraged in this scripture to honor the Lord with our wealth and the first part of our increase. When we do, the Bible tells us that we will reap the following benefits:

1. Your barns will be full of grain

Your barns refers to your storehouse, the places where you keep the proceeds of your harvest or earnings. This could refer to your finances, your business, your ministry, anything that you lay your hands to, God has promised to bless it:

The Lord will send a blessing on your barns and on everything you put your hand to. The Lord your God will bless you in the land He is giving you.

Deuteronomy 28:8 (NIV)

2. Your barrels will overflow with wine

Barrels overflowing with wine gives us a picture of abundance and joy that comes when we receive the Holy Spirit into our lives. When we honor God He blesses us with so much more so that we can be more of a blessing to others:

The threshing floors shall be full of wheat, And the vats shall overflow with new wine and oil.

Joel 2:24 (NKJV)

Prayer

Dear Lord, I choose to honor You with my wealth and the first part of my earnings. I know that as I do You will bless me with abundance and joy in Jesus name.

Why it is so important to be kind?

Wednesday 3 May 2017

Why is it important to be kind?

Never let loyalty and kindness leave you!

Tie them around your neck as a reminder.

Write them deep within your heart.

Proverbs 3:3 (NLT)

There are two virtues that we told in Proverbs 3:3 that should never leave us, loyalty and kindness. Today we want to examine why it is so important to be kind.

1, When you sow kindness you will reap kindness

The Bible tells us that we will always reap what we sow (Galatians 6:7). Therefore when you sow kindness you too will reap kindness:

Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.

Ephesians 4:32 (ESV)

2, Kindness is an act of love

When you are kind, it shows that you are obeying the first commandment of the Lord which is to love the Lord our God and to love our neighbor as ourselves:

Jesus replied, “‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. A second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’

Matthew 22:37-39 (NLT)

3, Kindness is a fruit of the Spirit

Kindness is one of the fruit of the Spirit that we as believers should produce in our lives:

But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things!

Galatians 5:22-23 (NLT)

Prayer

Dear Lord, please help me to be kind. Help me to help other people who are in need and sow acts of kindness in other people’s lives in Jesus name.

God settles His accounts on fair terms

God settles His accounts on fair terms

Therefore the kingdom of heaven is like a certain king who wanted to settle accounts with his servants.

Matthew 18:23

1, God settles His accounts on fair terms

God has made provision for our salvation in the precious blood of Jesus that was shed on the cross. As such in order to be in right standing with God all we need to do is genuinely repent and ask for forgiveness in the name of Jesus. As such no matter the debt, whether it is financial or emotional, God will settle in accordance with His word. Nothing is too hard for God to forgive.

“Behold, I am the Lord, the God of all flesh. Is there anything too hard for Me?

Jeremiah 27:32

To the Lord our God belong mercy and forgiveness, though we have rebelled against Him.

Daniel 9:9

2, God’s promises are in line with His word

God had made provision for every situation that we will encounter in our life. The price was paid at the cross with the blood of Jesus. God advises us that He is a God that cannot lie.

“God is not a man, that He should lie,
Nor a son of man, that He should repent.
Has He said, and will He not do?
Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good?

Numbers 23:19

Because God cannot lie, all the issues and concerns we have in life be they financial or otherwise have been settled at the cross. God is faithful to His word and we can stand on His word and trust Him.

Summary

God is a merciful God that desires to settle accounts with us. God is not moved by our circumstances such as debt.  God does not lie and is faithful. God has authority and power like a king, yet is willing to humble himself to negotiate with us. God is fair and upright and is able to settle any situation.

Why is complacency so dangerous?

Wednesday 22 February

For the turning away of the simple will slay them,

And the complacency of fools will destroy them;

Proverbs 1:32 (NKJV)

Complacency is a self-satisfied state of negligence or carelessness, especially in relation to one’s personal situation. For example, your life may not be going in the direction you know it is supposed to according to the Word of God, but you are too complacent, or lazy to do anything about it. Our key scripture tells us that complacency will destroy people. The question today then is, why is complacency so dangerous?

  1. It makes us lukewarm

Jesus rebuked the Church in Laodicea, which represents the end-time Church, for being neither cold nor hot. It is easy to become complacent, especially when life is comfortable, however Jesus warns us that anyone who is lukewarm, He will spit out of His mouth:

I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I could wish you were cold or hot. So then, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of My mouth.

Revelation 3:15 (NKJV)

  1. It leads to spiritual immaturity

Being complacent prevents us from growing in the spirit and makes us remain spiritual babies so that when we should be teaching others we still need others to teach us:

For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the first principles of the oracles of God; and you have come to need milk and not solid food.

Hebrews 5:12 (NKJV)

  1. It leads to poverty

Complacency can make people so relaxed and lazy that they neglect to work hard and do the things that will move them ahead and they suffer from poverty as a result:

The soul of the sluggard craves and gets nothing, while the soul of the diligent is richly supplied.

Proverbs 13:4 (ESV)

Next week, we will look at how to overcome complacency.

Prayer

Dear Lord, please help me to avoid complacency but to be diligent in everything I do in Jesus name.

How does God give us advice?

The men of Israel wanted to know if these men were telling the truth. So they tasted the bread—but they did not ask the Lord what they should do.

Joshua 9:14 (ERV)

There are many ways in which God, through His Holy Spirit may speak to us. Today we will look at some of the different ways in which God may give us advice:

The Word

The Bible is the Word of God which will never change. Heaven and earth may pass away but the Word of God will never pass away. The Word of God is described as a Lamb for our feet and a Light for our path (Psalm 119:105). Light gives illumination where there is darkness therefore anytime we find ourselves in darkness and need advice about a particular situation we can turn to the Word of God for guidance.

Still small voice

When the Prophet Elijah was afraid and was running for his life from Jezebel, God spoke to him through a still small voice and told him who to anoint as King over Israel and who to anoint as his successor (1 Kings 19:12-16). The Holy Spirit does not shout, He often speaks to us through a gentle quiet voice which we hear through our spirit.

Audible voice

Sometimes God may speak to us through an audible voice. When Saul was going to the city of Damascus with a letter from the High Priest to find followers of The Lord to arrest and bring back to Jerusalem, a very bright light from heaven suddenly shined around him. He fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to him, “Saul, Saul! Why are you persecuting Me?” Saul said, “Who are you, Lord?” The voice answered, “I am Jesus, the One you are persecuting. Get up now and go into the city. Someone there will tell you what you must do.”

The men traveling with Saul just stood there, unable to speak. They heard the voice, but they saw no one. Saul was blinded by this experience and after fasting for three days a follower of Jesus named Ananias came and laid hands on him so that he could see again. Saul then got baptised and he began to go to the synagogues to tell people about Jesus (Acts 9:1-22).

Dreams

The Bible is filled with numerous stories of men and women who have received guidance, warning, and advice through dreams. When the wise men left after seeing Baby Jesus, an Angel from the Lord came to Joseph in a dream. The Angel told him to get up and take the Child with His mother and escape to Egypt because Herod wanted to kill the Child. They were to stay in Egypt until the Angel told them to come back. When Herod died, an Angel from the Lord came to Joseph in a dream and said, “Get up! Take the Child with His mother and go to Israel. Those who were trying to kill the Child are now dead” (Matthew 2:13-21).

Visions

A vision is a spiritual or mental image. Cornelius who was a Roman army officer had a vision in which he saw an Angel. The Angel told him that God had heard his prayers and had seen all his gifts to the poor and he was to send some men to the city of Joppa to get a man named Simon, who is also called Peter.

The next day Peter was going up to the roof to pray. He was hungry and wanted to eat but while they were preparing the food for Peter to eat, he also had a vision. He saw something coming down through the open sky. It looked like a big sheet being lowered to the ground by its four corners. In it were all kinds of animals, reptiles, and birds. Then a voice said to him, “Get up, Peter; kill anything here and eat it.”

But Peter said, “I can’t do that, Lord! I have never eaten anything that is not pure or fit to be used for food.” But the voice said to him again, “God has made these things pure. Don’t say they are unfit to eat.” This happened three times. Then the whole thing was taken back up into heaven. When the vision was over the men that Cornelius sent had arrived and were waiting for him. As a result of his vision, Peter went to Cornelius house and Cornelius and all his household became believers in Jesus Christ and were the first Gentles to be filled with the Holy Spirit (Acts 10).

Prophecies

Prophecy is predicting the future with certainty as the Lord reveals it. God may at times speak to us through His messengers about things to come. Agabus was one such Prophet. He spoke with the help of the Spirit and said that a famine was coming to the whole world where there will be no food for people to eat. The Lord’s followers decided that they would each send as much as they could to help their brothers and sisters who lived in Judea. They gathered the money and gave it to Barnabas and Saul, who took it to the elders in Judea (Acts 11:27-30).

Inner knowing

Inner knowing is the ability to know something through our spirit or heart. Human beings are spirits, we have a soul and live in a body. God does not look at our outward appearance but He looks at the heart and it is through our heart that His Spirit communicates to us “The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God.” (Romans 8:16)

Prayer

Dear Father, please open my eyes to see wonderful things from Your Word. Let my spiritual eyes be opened to see dreams and visions and let my spiritual ears be opened to hear Your still small voice and Your audible voice. Please help me not to despise prophecies but test them all; and hold on to what is good in Jesus name.

A Great Leader Must Have Vision

And the Lord said unto Joshua, See, I have given into thine hand Jericho, and the king thereof, and the mighty men of valour.

Joshua 6:2

Last week, we learned that Joshua and the Children of Israel rose up early to capture the City of Jericho. Before they took the City, The Lord told Joshua to see the victory even before it was attained.

This teaches us another important lesson about leadership; a great leader must have vision, or the ability to see ahead. The Bible says that where there is no vision, the people perish (Proverbs 29:18). In other words, people perish where they do not know where they are going.

A vision is a mental sight, i.e. a dream, revelation, or oracle to guide you to where you are going. God gives us all visions about what we are created to do and where we should be going. These may take the form of day visions where you perceive something with your spiritual eyes that the natural eye cannot see, or through dreams whilst sleeping.

As believers in Jesus, we walk by faith and not by sight therefore a leader must be able to see beyond the natural circumstances of how things are, and look through the eyes of faith to see what is possible with the help of God.

As 2015 ends and we enter into 2016, if you don’t have a vision or road map for your life, don’t despair. If you will follow these instructions, I believe that God will give you a vision for your life:

How to develop a vision for your life:

  1. Repent of your sins and surrender your life to Jesus Christ, acknowledging that Jesus died to forgive you of your sins and ask Him to come into your life and be Lord over your life;
  2. Pray and ask God to give you His vision and purpose for your life;
  3. Whatever ideas come into your heart and mind, write it down;
  4. Reflect on the ideas that come to you and ask God for direction on how to proceed;
  5. Take action on the direction given to you by God. Do something everyday that moves you closer towards your God-given vision.

Prayer

Dear Lord, I thank You that before You formed me in the belly You knew me, and before I came forth out the womb You sanctified me and ordained me. Please open the eyes of my heart and reveal Your vision for my life so that I can fulfil Your purpose for my life which was given to me in Christ Jesus before the world began. Amen.
