God is the master money is the servant

No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon

Matthew 6:24

God is the master money is the servant

God’s utmost desire is for us to worship Him alone. Essentially the Bible teaches us that money is our servant and that God is our master. This is evident in the scripture Matthew 6:24. God is aware that we have various needs and our financial need is one of the important needs God acknowledges. God cautions us in His word to take ownership of money as a servant to fulfil our needs and not a master that has authority over us. God wants us to have a balanced relationship with money.

1, God wants us to have money.

God desires that we live abundantly. He desires that we have money to meet all our needs. God’s cautionary warning comes into play when the sovereign relationship He desires with him is questioned. In the reference to “Mammon,” in the scripture above, we are warned to not try and serve both God and money at the same. Mammon is a word that occurs in various ancient languages, meaning wealth or greed, often personified as a false deity. In simple everyday terms, that final statement of Jesus means, “You cannot serve both God and money.”

2, Money shouldn’t be the final authority in our life

God desires that He is the final authority in our life. King Solomon the wisest and wealthiest man in the world answers many of life’s tough questions in the Bible book of Ecclesiastes. Out of all King Solomon’s wisdom his final conclusion was that we need to fear God and obey God’s commandments. Ecclesiastes 12:13. This goes to show us that God desires to be at the centre of our life, since all things belong to him and it’s only by his grace that we can do anything.

Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God and keep His commandments,
For this is man’s all

Ecclesiastes 12:13

3, God desires obedience more than anything

God wants our desires to line up with His. God’s greatest desire is that we are obedient to His commandments. In the Bible it is clear that when we obey and listen to God we are blessed. When we lose faith or ignore God’s commandants we fall outside of the will of God and can suffer detrimentally. This is evident in chapter 1 Samuel 15. In this Bible story King Saul fails to follow God’s direction to completely destroy and kill King Agag and his possessions. Saul instead decided to take King Agag alive and take some of the plunder which he went on to justify to the prophet Samuel. The prophet Samuel rebukes King Saul telling him that obedience is better than sacrifice. As a result of King Saul’s disobedience he lost his kingship. He received severe consequences for a severe act of disobedience.

Has the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices,
As in obeying the voice of the Lord?
Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice,
And to heed than the fat of rams.

Samuel 15:22

Summary

In conclusion it is clear that God desires that we serve Him first above anything else. It is made apparent that we cannot serve two masters. God wants us to be his first desire. He wants us to make money a servant and not a master. This is because He desires us to be obedient and have full respect for his sovereignty. God desires that we fear Him and obey all his commandments as wise king Solomon advised us to do.
