Why should we get wisdom?

Wisdom is the principal thing;

Therefore get wisdom.

And in all your getting, get understanding.

Proverbs 4:7

Our scripture above tells that wisdom is the principal thing therefore we should get wisdom and with all our getting we must get understanding. Why should we get wisdom?

1, Wisdom will promote you

Wisdom will promote you because it will help you to know what to say and how to behave in every situation you may find yourself in which will ultimately lead to your promotion. For example, Daniel was promoted because he had more wisdom than all the wise men of Babylon and as a result he was promoted to a place of honour:

Then the king promoted Daniel and gave him many generous gifts. He made him ruler over the entire province of Babylon and chief governor over all the wise men of Babylon.

Daniel 2:48 (HCSB)

2, Wisdom will bring you honour

Having wisdom brings you to a place of honour where you are highly esteemed because of the wisdom that you possess. For example, because of the wisdom that Joseph had in being able to interpret Pharaoh’s dreams, he too was promoted and brought to a place of great honour:

Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Since God has revealed the meaning of the dreams to you, clearly no one else is as intelligent or wise as you are. You will be in charge of my court, and all my people will take orders from you. Only I, sitting on my throne, will have a rank higher than yours.”

Genesis 41:39-40 (NLT)

3, Wisdom will give you grace and glory

When you are a person of wisdom, you are shown kindness and honour which others are not privileged to experience. This is because wisdom comes from God and when you fear Him, He will ensure that you are given divine grace and glory:

She will place on your head an ornament of grace;

A crown of glory she will deliver to you.”

Proverbs 4:9

Prayer

Dear Lord, please help me to get wisdom and with all my getting give me understanding in Jesus name, amen.

Final Word from Joshua: As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord

And if it seems evil to you to serve the Lord, choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”

Joshua 24:15

In his final address to the Children of Israel, Joshua gave them a stark choice to make, they were to decide on whom they would serve; the false gods of their ancestors or The Lord God of Israel.

Likewise, as our studies in the book of Joshua comes to an end, you and I have a choice to make, are we going to serve the god of this world or are we going to follow The Lord who make heaven and earth? For those who want to serve The Lord, what does it mean to serve The Lord?

  1. Worship God for Who He is

The service that God requires is one of worship. True worship is one that flows from deep within our spirit and acknowledges God simply for Who He is. This worship must be done in the Spirit and in truth:

God is a Spirit: and they that worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth.

John 4:24

  1. Giving Him thanks

God delights in thanksgiving and thanksgiving is the sacrifice that God requires. We have so many things to thank Him for. The fact that we are alive and in our right mind is enough reason to thank Him:

Offer to God thanksgiving, And pay your vows to the Most High.

Psalm 50:14 (NKJV)

  1. Serving humanity

We also bring honour to God when we find our purpose or reason for being born and we are fruitful in that arena. We become fruitful and productive when we serve humanity with our gifts and talents and make the world a better place than when we found it:

And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.

Genesis 1:28

Prayer

Dear Lord, I choose like Joshua, that as for me and my house, we too will serve the Lord in Jesus name.

Every promise of God is true

Behold, this day I am going the way of all the earth. And you know in all your hearts and in all your souls that not one thing has failed of all the good things which the Lord your God spoke concerning you. All have come to pass for you; not one word of them has failed.

Joshua 23:14

In his second to last address, Joshua reminded the Children of Israel of all that The Lord had done for them and how that not one thing had failed which The Lord told them, they had all come to pass. The Lord is likewise telling you that every promise He has made concerning you will also come to pass. Here is why:

  1. God cannot lie

Human beings may lie however God cannot lie. Every word He has spoken concerning your life will surely come to pass:

God is not a man, so He does not lie. He is not human, so He does not change His mind. Has He ever spoken and failed to act? Has He ever promised and not carried it through?

Numbers 23:19 (NLT)

However His promises are also conditional. He will do His part if we will do our part in obeying Him and follow His commands then He will bring to pass everything He has promised:

And it shall come to pass, if thou shalt hearken diligently unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to observe and to do all his commandments which I command thee this day, that the LORD thy God will set thee on high above all nations of the earth

Deuteronomy 28:1 (KJV)

  1. God cannot fail

As human beings we are prone to fail one another however this is not so of God, He cannot fail us, His very nature is faithfulness:

If we are faithless, he remains faithful, for he cannot disown himself.

2 Timothy 2:13 (NIV)

  1. God is patient

Sometimes we as human beings think that God is slow because He doesn’t answer our prayers when we want or expect Him to respond to them however we have to remember that God’s is patient and His timing is not our timing. He is patient because He doesn’t want any of us to perish:

The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.

2 Peter 3:9

Prayer

Dear Father, I thank You that every Word of Yours is true. I believe that every promise You have given concerning my life will surely come to pass in Jesus name.

How we live our lives can affect an entire generation

Did not Achan the son of Zerah commit a trespass in the accursed thing, and wrath fell on all the congregation of Israel? And that man did not perish alone in his iniquity.

Joshua 22:20

When Achan sinned by taking of the accursed things, he probably thought that he was doing no harm to anybody, but in fact he was wrong. His sins affected the whole of the Children of Israel. They lost the battle in Ai and 36 men died as a result. This story teaches us important lessons about our own lives:

  1. Sin affects not only us but our children

Even though it was Achan alone who sinned, his wife and children and all that he had including even his animals were destroyed. We likewise need to be mindful that the way we live our lives affects not only us but our children and grandchildren after us:

The LORD is slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, forgiving iniquity and transgression, but He will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, to the third and the fourth generation.

Numbers 14:18 (ESV)

  1. Sin affects our community

Achan’s sin di not only affect him and his family but it affected the whole community. Likewise the way we live our lives affects our community, including our neighbourhoods, congregations, schools, work places, etc. The Bible tells us that whatever is done in private will be revealed in public and this also applies to sin. Even though it may be committed in private it still has wider consequences:

For all that is secret will eventually be brought into the open, and everything that is concealed will be brought to light and made known to all.

Luke 8:17 (NLT)

  1. Sin affects our nations

Achan’s sins affected the whole nation of Israel, however there is also hope because God assures us that if we will humble ourselves and pray and turn from our wicked ways, He will forgive our sins and heal our lands:

If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.

2 Chronicles 7:14 (KJV)

Prayer

Dear Lord, I know that You are a loving God and slow to anger, however please help me not to take Your love for granted but to live my life in such a way that I will leave a Godly inheritance for my children in Jesus name, amen.

God’s Word will never fail: He will do all of what He has promised

Not a word failed of any good thing which the Lord had spoken to the house of Israel. All came to pass.

Joshua 21:45

We learn in the Scripture above that not one word failed of any good thing that God had spoken to Israel. Everything He said concerning Israel came to pass. As it was then, so it is now; we can be assured that everything God has promised us in His Word for our lives will come to pass. Here is why:

  1. God never fails

Moses assured the children of Israel that God will personally go ahead of them and He will be with them. He said that He will never fail them and that is what He wants you to know today. No matter what you may be going through, God will never abandon or fail you:

Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord will personally go ahead of you. He will be with you; he will neither fail you nor abandon you.”

Deuteronomy 31:8 (NLT)

  1. Not one of God’s Word will fail

Jesus told us that until heaven and earth disappear, not one small detail of God’s Word will disappear until it has been fulfilled:

I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not even the smallest detail of God’s law will disappear until its purpose is achieved.

Matthew 5:18 (NLT)

  1. The Word of God will accomplish the thing it was sent to do

The Word of God will always produce fruit. It will accomplish all of what God wants it to and will prosper everywhere He sends it:

So shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; It shall not return to Me void, But it shall accomplish what I please, And it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it.

Isaiah 55:11 (NKJV)

Prayer

Dear Lord, I thank You that Your word is alive and powerful. Help me to believe that Your word will never fail and that You will do all of what You have promised in Jesus name, amen.

God is Our Refuge

The Lord also spoke to Joshua, saying, “Speak to the children of Israel, saying: ‘Appoint for yourselves cities of refuge, of which I spoke to you through Moses, that the slayer who kills a person accidentally or unintentionally may flee there; and they shall be your refuge from the avenger of blood.

Joshua 20:1-3

God told Joshua that he must speak to the children of Israel and appoint cities of refuge so that a person who accidently kills someone may run there; it was to be a city of refuge. Today, we may not have a physical city of refuge that we can run to if we are in trouble, however we can run to God in prayer because:

  1. God is our Refuge

The Bible tells us that God is our refuge and strength. He is our refuge because He gives us hope, our shelter, and we can trust Him and run to Him when we are in trouble:

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

Psalm 46:1

  1. God is our Fortress

A fortress is a strong defence, a stronghold and that is what God is to His children:

I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in Him will I trust.

Psalm 91:2

God is our Deliverer

God is our Saviour, deliverer and preserver. He has delivered us from the kingdom of darkness and translated us into the Kingdom of His dear Son Jesus Christ (Colossians 1:13):

The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer;

My God, my strength, in Whom I will trust;

My shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.

Psalm 18:2

Prayer

Dear Lord, I thank You that You are my refuge and strength, and a very present help in trouble. Help me to not be afraid but to trust You completely in Jesus name.

God is waiting on you to possess the land

Then Joshua said to the children of Israel: “How long will you neglect to go and possess the land which the Lord God of your fathers has given you?

Joshua 18:3

A time came when the whole congregation of the children of Israel assembled together at Shiloh, and set up the tabernacle of meeting there. Even though they had captured most of the land, there were still seven tribes of the children of Israel which had not yet received their inheritance. Joshua then asked them how long they were going to wait around until they took possession of the land. This teaches us a number of important lessons about our own journey here on earth:

  1. The land is there for you to possess

Joshua told the children of Israel that God had already given them the land and that land was there to be possessed. God has placed a land or territory for all of us as His children to inherit here on earth. That land represents an assignment that He has placed you on earth to fulfil. When you wait on Him and obey Him, He will promote you to possess the land:

Wait on the Lord, and keep His way, and He shall exalt you to inherit the land; when the wicked are cut off, you shall see it.

Psalm 37:34 (NKJV)

  1. The key to possess the land is taking action

Joshua told the children of Israel that the land was there for them to possess and was encouraging them to take action. Likewise whatever assignment God has placed in your heart to achieve can become a reality if you are determined to take action to bring it to pass. James tells us that if we say we have faith but we don’t take action it is completely useless:

Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.

James 2:17 (NKJV)

Prayer

Dear Lord, please help me not to be a hearer of Your Word only but to be a doer in Jesus name.

Carnality, Flesh, God, Jesus Christ, Overcome, Uncategorized, Why

Why must we overcome carnality?

And they did not drive out the Canaanites who dwelt in Gezer; but the Canaanites dwell among the Ephraimites to this day and have become forced laborers.

Joshua 16:10

You will recall from our previous studies that “Canaanite” means, “lowlands people”. Since the word “land” is related to the concept of “earth” or “ground”, the “lowlands” refer to low earthly passions, or what the Bible calls carnality. Canaanite spirits are the spirits behind addictions and sexual perversions.

The Children of Ephraim could not drive out the Canaanites, and they are still living with them up to this day. This teaches us that as Christians, if steps are not taken, we too will continue to live a carnal life. Why must we therefore take steps to overcome the flesh?

  1. Following the desires of the flesh can lead to eternal separation from God

The Bible tells us that some of the works of the flesh are: sexual immorality, impurity, lustful pleasures, idolatry, sorcery, hostility, quarreling, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition, dissension, division, envy, drunkenness, wild parties, and other sins like these. It goes on to tell us that anyone living that sort of life will not inherit the Kingdom of God (Galatians 5:19-21). To not inherit the Kingdom of God is then to be eternally separated from God which is spiritual death.

  1. It prevents us from inheriting the promises of God

When we live according to the desires of the flesh we will not be able to inherit all the promises of God for our lives because the promises of God are obtained by faith. Faith is a fruit of the Spirit therefore to exercise our faith we must live in the Spirit and not in the flesh:

So the promise is received by faith. It is given as a free gift. And we are all certain to receive it, whether or not we live according to the law of Moses, if we have faith like Abraham’s. For Abraham is the father of all who believe.

Romans 4:16 (NLT)

  1. It is enmity with God

We are told that the flesh is in enmity or conflict against the Spirit and the choice is up to us as to whether we give in to the flesh and fulfil its sinful desires or whether we walk in the Spirit and please God. We cannot do both:

I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish.

Galatians 5:16-17

Prayer

Dear Lord, please help me to walk in the Spirit so that I will not fulfil the desires of the flesh in Jesus name, amen.

Once you take possession of the land it will rest from war

Joshua blessed him. He gave Hebron to Caleb son of Jephunneh as an inheritance. Hebron belongs to Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite still today, because he gave himself totally to God, the God of Israel.

The name of Hebron used to be Kiriath Arba, named after Arba, the greatest man among the Anakim.

And the land had rest from war.

Joshua 14:13-15

Once Caleb took possession of Hebron, the land rested from war. This teaches us a number of important lessons:

  1. Before a breakthrough there will be a state of chaos

In our lives as believers in Jesus Christ, there will be times when before we breakthrough to the next dimension, everything that can go wrong, will go wrong. There will be a time of chaos and even confusion however this is not designed to defeat you, it is designed to promote you. You just have to resolve that by the strength of God you will breakthrough to your next level:

For by thee I have run through a troop; and by my God have I leaped over a wall.

Psalm 18:29

  1. The Promised Land is a place of total rest

You see, once we get to the Promised Land in the New Jerusalem, there will be no more tears and all the chaos of this present world will cease:

And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.

Revelation 21:4

  1. We can enter into the rest of The Lord even whilst on earth

Even here on earth there is a state of great peace that we can attain once we decide to give our lives to Jesus and obey His Words. This rest and peace comes when we trust The Lord and keep our minds steadfastly on Him knowing that He will never let us down:

Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.

Isaiah 26:3 (KJV)

Prayer

Dear Lord, please help me to fight to take possession of all the land that You have given me so that it will rest from war in Jesus name.

After war, there is rest

So Joshua took the whole land, according to all that the Lord had said to Moses; and Joshua gave it as an inheritance to Israel according to their divisions by their tribes. Then the land rested from war

Joshua 11:23

We have seen from the past few months that Joshua and the Children of Israel did not enter into the Promised Land by sitting around and folding their arms. They had to fight in order to dispossess the land of the former inhabitants whom God had said they should drive out. However after he took the whole land and gave it as an inheritance to Israel, the land rested from war. This teaches us a number of important lessons about our own Christian journey:

  1. We will have to fight in order to possess our possessions

The story of Joshua shows us that we must fight in order to possess all the possessions that God has already given us through His Word. We have to fight for our family, health, finances, ministry, businesses, career etc. We are freely given the gift of salvation through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, however in order for us to be able to enjoy all that Jesus Christ died to give us, including eternal life, we have to fight the good fight of faith:

Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, to which you were also called and have confessed the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.

1 Timothy 6:12

  1. After the war, however there is rest

Joshua and the Children of Israel did not fight forever. Once they took the whole land, the land rested from war. You see, when you obey God, there is a place in Him where you no longer have to fight because when your enemies come against you, God will make them to scatter in seven different ways:

The Lord will cause your enemies who rise against you to be defeated before your face; they shall come out against you one way and flee before you seven ways.

Deuteronomy 28:7

  1. We should strive to enter into the rest of The Lord

The land rested from war because Joshua obeyed God. Let us therefore strive to walk in obedience to the Word of God so that we too can enter into the rest of The Lord:

Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will perish by following their example of disobedience.

Hebrews 4:11 (NIV)

Prayer

Dear Father, I know Your Word says there is a time for war and a time for peace. Please give me strength to fight in the time of war so that I can enter into Your rest in Jesus name.
