How do you obtain seven-fold restoration?

How do you obtain seven-fold restoration?

Excuses might be found for a thief who steals because he is starving.

But if he is caught, he must pay back seven times what he stole, even if he has to sell everything in his house.

Proverbs 6:30-31 (NLT)

There are many things that are stolen from us as believers in Jesus Christ, many times without us even knowing it. The Bible tells us that the enemy comes to steal, kill and destroy but Jesus has come that we might receive life and more abundantly (John 10:10).

Sometimes the thief comes to steal our joy, peace, health, finances, relationships and so forth. Sometimes, you may have dreams of losing things and it manifests in the natural realm. The question then is, how do we get those things back?

  1. Restore what we owe to others

Many times we think restoration is only one way, but we also must restore unto people what is due to them. We are encouraged not to owe anyone anything but our love, therefore if there is anything that we have taken from people, we must restore it back to them:

Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for whoever loves others has fulfilled the law.

Romans 13:8 (NIV)

  1. Prayer for restoration

We need to pray to the God of Restoration to restore us. The Lord has promised to restore unto us the years that the locust has eaten. Therefore, let us put God in remembrance and ask Him to restore all that the enemy has stolen from us, so that we can make up for the lost years:

And I will restore to you the years that the locust hath eaten, the cankerworm, and the caterpiller, and the palmerworm, My great army which I sent among you.

Joel 2:25 (KJV)

  1. Demand back what the enemy stole from you

The Bible says that if the thief is caught, he must pay back seven-fold. Therefore any time you become aware the enemy has stolen from you; that is the time to demand back a seven-fold restoration.

Prayer:

Oh God of Restoration, please restore unto me everything that the enemy has stolen from my life knowingly or unknowingly in Jesus’ name:

How can we avoid being seduced by sin this year?

How can we avoid being seduced by sin this year?

So she seduced him with her pretty speech and enticed him with her flattery. He followed her at once, like an ox going to the slaughter. He was like a stag caught in a trap, awaiting the arrow that would pierce its heart. He was like a bird flying into a snare, little knowing it would cost him his life.

Proverbs 7: 21-23 (NLT)

Happy New Year!

A new year provides an opportunity for us to start afresh and, it’s a time when we take stock of the lessons we learned from last year and think about what we would like to achieve in the year ahead.

Just as God has good plans for our lives, we can be certain that the enemy of our souls also has bad plans for us. These plans will come in the form of temptations and sinful traps, which can be deadly, as we can see in the scripture above. Since we are not ignorant of Satan’ devises, how can we avoid the sin that would try to seduce us this year?

  1. Listen to the Words of God

Firstly, we must be good listeners of God’s Word, and not listeners only, but doers of His Word. When we do this, we will avoid falling into the traps of sin:

So listen to me, my sons, and pay attention to my words.

Proverbs 7:24 (NLT)

  1. Don’t let your heart follow in sin

Sin begins in the heart as a thought before it is actually committed therefore, we are encouraged not to let our heart stray towards sin.

Remember Jesus said that if a man looks at a woman in the wrong way, he has already sinned in his heart. Therefore, we must guard our heart from anything that will lead us towards the path of sin. The way we do that is to capture the thought as soon as it comes and make it bow down to the obedience of Christ:

Don’t let your hearts stray away toward her.

Don’t wander down her wayward path.

Proverbs 7:25 (NLT)

Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.

Proverbs 4:23 (NIV)

  1. Simply say no to sin

When we feel so tempted to sin, we must simply say no, and declare we are in the righteousness of God through Christ Jesus and thereby take authority over the sin, so that it does not control us. God told Cain that sin was eager to control him, but he must overcome it and be its master, and you and I can do the same thing:

You will be accepted if you do what is right. But if you refuse to do what is right, then watch out! Sin is crouching at the door, eager to control you. But you must subdue it and be its master.”

Genesis 4:7 (NLT)

Prayer:

Dear Lord, please help me to listen to Your Words and live a life of righteousness in 2018 in Jesus΄ name.

How do you gain self-control?

How do you gain self-control?

He will die for lack of self-control; he will be lost because of his great foolishness.

Proverbs 5:23

The passage above tells us that the  lack of self-control can lead to death. The question then is, how do we gain self-control?

  1. Accept Jesus as our Lord and Saviour

We are told that one of the nine fruits of the Holy Spirit is self-control (Galatians 5:22). Therefore when we have the Holy Spirit, He will help us to control ourselves. However, we can only receive the Holy Spirit once we accept Jesus Christ as our Lord and Saviour, because once we believe in Him, He seals us with the Holy Spirit:

And now you Gentiles have also heard the truth, the Good News that God saves you. And when you believed in Christ, he identified you as his own by giving you the Holy Spirit, whom he promised long ago.

Ephesians 1:13 (NLT)

  1. Depend on the Holy Spirit

When we depend on the Holy Spirit, He will help us to control ourselves. He does this by convicting us of sin and helping us to live a life of righteousness:

And when He comes, He will convict the world of its sin, and of God’s righteousness, and of the coming judgment.

John 16:8 (NLT)

  1. Discipline ourselves

In order to have self-control, we must discipline ourselves to say no to sin and whatever pleasures we may enjoy that we know can lead to destruction and death. Jesus said that if your right eye causes you to sin pluck it out (Matthew 5:29). In other words, we should not give room to whatever will hinder us in our Christian walk to heaven. Paul also encouraged us to discipline our bodies and keep it under control, so that we may win the prize that is set before us which is eternal life:

I discipline my body like an athlete, training it to do what it should. Otherwise, I fear that after preaching to others, I myself might be disqualified.

1 Corinthians 9:27 (NLT)

Prayer

Dear Lord, please help me to discipline myself so that I can win the prize of eternal life that is laid before me in Jesus name, amen.

God is waiting on you to possess the land

Then Joshua said to the children of Israel: “How long will you neglect to go and possess the land which the Lord God of your fathers has given you?

Joshua 18:3

A time came when the whole congregation of the children of Israel assembled together at Shiloh, and set up the tabernacle of meeting there. Even though they had captured most of the land, there were still seven tribes of the children of Israel which had not yet received their inheritance. Joshua then asked them how long they were going to wait around until they took possession of the land. This teaches us a number of important lessons about our own journey here on earth:

  1. The land is there for you to possess

Joshua told the children of Israel that God had already given them the land and that land was there to be possessed. God has placed a land or territory for all of us as His children to inherit here on earth. That land represents an assignment that He has placed you on earth to fulfil. When you wait on Him and obey Him, He will promote you to possess the land:

Wait on the Lord, and keep His way, and He shall exalt you to inherit the land; when the wicked are cut off, you shall see it.

Psalm 37:34 (NKJV)

  1. The key to possess the land is taking action

Joshua told the children of Israel that the land was there for them to possess and was encouraging them to take action. Likewise whatever assignment God has placed in your heart to achieve can become a reality if you are determined to take action to bring it to pass. James tells us that if we say we have faith but we don’t take action it is completely useless:

Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.

James 2:17 (NKJV)

Prayer

Dear Lord, please help me not to be a hearer of Your Word only but to be a doer in Jesus name.

You must be fearless to possess your mountain

And Joshua spoke to the house of Joseph—to Ephraim and Manasseh—saying, “You are a great people and have great power; you shall not have only one lot, but the mountain country shall be yours. Although it is wooded, you shall cut it down, and its farthest extent shall be yours; for you shall drive out the Canaanites, though they have iron chariots and are strong.”

Joshua 17:17-18

Here Joshua was encouraging the house of Joseph – Ephraim and Manasseh that they should not be satisfied with one strip of land. He wanted them to possess the mountain country and to drive out the Canaanites even though they had iron chariots and were strong. There are several lessons about this advice that we can apply to our own lives:

  1. You have great potential within you

Joshua told the house of Joseph – Ephraim and Manasseh that they are a great people and have great power. The Lord wants us to know that we are a great people and have great power and potential within us. He has made us in His own image and He has filled us, as believers in Jesus Christ, with His Holy Spirit:

Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is He that is in you, than he that is in the world.

1 John 4:4 (KJV)

  1. God doesn’t want you to just have a little piece of the land, He wants you to possess a whole mountain

Joshua told the house of Joseph that they were not to be satisfied with just the strip of land because the mountain country was also reserved for them. God is saying to you that whatever piece of land you now possess, there is a greater mountain for you to climb and attain. He is the God of enlargement, and He said we must ask of Him and He will give us the nations as our inheritance and the outermost part of the world as our possession:

Only ask, and I will give you the nations as your inheritance, the whole earth as your possession.

Psalm 2:8 (NLT)

  1. The mountain is inhabited by spiritual giants however you can drive them out

If the mountain was easy to conquer, the house of Joseph would have driven out its inhabitants and taken possession of it. However it wasn’t and that is why Joshua had to encourage them to take possession.

There are mountains that God may call you to climb; it could be a mountain of career, ministerial, business, finance, family, education, media, etc. As you begin to climb, you may find that there are spiritual giants standing in the way who are determined to prevent you from conquering and inhabiting that mountain. However Jesus Christ has already defeated Satan when He died on the Cross and He has given us the power to tread upon every spiritual serpent and scorpion and they shall not hurt us:

Thou shalt tread upon the lion and adder: the young lion and the dragon shalt thou trample under feet.

Psalm 91:13 (KJV)

Prayer

Dear Lord, please help me to be bold so that I can possess the mountain You have laid out for me to climb in Jesus name, amen.

You must claim what is rightfully yours

But Zelophehad the son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, had no sons, but only daughters. And these are the names of his daughters: Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah. And they came near before Eleazar the priest, before Joshua the son of Nun, and before the rulers, saying, “The Lord commanded Moses to give us an inheritance among our brothers.” Therefore, according to the commandment of the Lord, he gave them an inheritance among their father’s brothers.

Joshua 17:3-4

In this story, the daughters of Zelophehad decided to go to the leaders of Israel and claim their father’s inheritance that they would have received if they were sons. What lessons can we learn from these daughters that we too can apply to our own lives?

  1. We must know our inheritance

These daughters went up to Eleazar the Priest and Joshua the Leader and told them what the Lord had commanded Moses, which was to give them an inheritance among their brothers.

Likewise, we too must know what God has promised us through His Word. We get to know the promises of God when we read the Bible on a daily basis to remind ourselves of God’s promises because it is God that said we must bring things to His remembrance:

Put me in remembrance: let us plead together: declare thou, that thou mayest be justified.

Isaiah 43:26 (KJV)

  1. We must be bold in claiming our inheritance

Once the daughters knew their inheritance, they took a bold action in going to the leaders of Israel and claiming what was rightfully theirs.

Likewise, we too must have the confidence to approach God boldly concerning His promises for our lives which has not yet manifested:

So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.

Hebrews 4:16 (NLT)

  1. We must be fearless when we stand before rulers

The daughters of Zelophehad did not consider that they were women and probably thus not allowed to stand before the Priest and the Leader. They did not care about their social standing but were instead determined to claim what was rightfully theirs.

We must therefore also disregard our social standing and instead claim all the promises of God, regardless of who we have to stand before. The Lord promised that when we stand before important people He will give us the right things to say:

You will be brought before governors and kings for My sake, as a testimony to them and to the Gentiles. But when they deliver you up, do not worry about how or what you should speak. For it will be given to you in that hour what you should speak; for it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father who speaks in you.

Matthew 10:18-20 (NKJV)

Prayer

Dear Lord, please give me the boldness to claim what You have promised me in Your Word in Jesus name, amen.

Why is it so difficult to overcome rejection?

As for the Jebusites, the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the children of Judah could not drive them out; but the Jebusites dwell with the children of Judah at Jerusalem to this day

Joshua 15:63

You will recall from our previous study that Jebus means “trodden” and “bus” means to “trample, loath, tread down, tread under foot, be polluted”. From these two definitions we can infer that the Jebusite spirit is one that puts people down and makes them feel small and rejected.

The scripture above tells us that the children of Judah who came to inhabit Jerusalem could not drive out the Jebusites, but the Jebusites are still living with them up to this day. We can infer from this that rejection is a spirit that can remain with you for a long time unless you do something about it. What does the Bible say about rejection?

  1. Rejection leads to promotion

Jesus Christ, came to save the world from our sins and yet He was rejected by the religious leaders of His day. Isaiah describes Him as a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief (Isaiah 53:3). He is also the Stone that the builders rejected however He became the chief Cornerstone. This tells us that the Lord can use even rejection to promote us:

The stone which the builders rejected

Has become the chief cornerstone.

This was the Lord’s doing;

It is marvelous in our eyes.

Psalm 118:22-23

  1. Sometimes our mothers and fathers may reject us

The Psalmist acknowledged that our fathers and mothers may reject us but the Lord will take us up therefore when we are rejected by our loved ones we should not dwell on this because we have a Father in heaven who will never leave us nor forsake us:

When my father and my mother forsake me,

Then the Lord will take care of me.

Psalm 27:10

  1. God will never reject you

God said He will not forsake His people, He will always remain with us. Jesus Christ came to heal all those who have a broken heart and so if you feel rejected today, please call unto Jesus and cast all your cares unto Him because He cares for you:

Casting all your care upon Him; for He careth for you.

1 Peter 5:7

Prayer

Dear Lord, I thank You for showing me that You can use rejection to promote me. Please help me to cast all my cares upon You because You care for me.

You must drive out the giants

Caleb drove out the three sons of Anak from there: Sheshai, Ahiman, and Talmai, the children of Anak

Joshua 15:14

Once Caleb was given the land of Hebron, he drove out the children of Anak from the land. Anak was a giant, he was the son of Arba, who at the time was regarded as the “greatest man among the Anakim” (Joshua 14:15).

When the 12 spies had returned from spying the Promised Land, 10 of them came back with an evil report that they could not conquer the land because there were “giants in the land” (Numbers 13:33). As a result of their refusal to trust God completely they were forced to wander around in the wilderness for 40 years. Once they entered the Promised Land, Joshua expelled the giants from the hill country and Caleb drove them out. This teaches us a number of important lessons about life:

  1. There are giants on the way to our Promised Land

In this Christian life, there are things that God may call you to do which may seem too over whelming for you to do. Whenever God calls you to do something new, there may be giant problems that you will have to encounter, i.e. lack of finances and resources and time and other problems which may seem insurmountable. However it is in those situations that we have to trust God and wait patiently on Him because He will exalt us to inherit the land:

Wait on the Lord,

And keep His way,

And He shall exalt you to inherit the land;

When the wicked are cut off, you shall see it.

Psalm 37:34

  1. Giants are not there to defeat you but to promote you

Before we can move to the next dimension or level in our spiritual lives, there are certain giants that we have to slay. For example, before David became King he had to defeat Goliath who was a descendent of Anak. In our lives, before we can walk in the purpose that God has given us, we too will have to conquer the giants of fear and other emotions that will try to keep us back. We have to believe that no matter how hot the battle may get, God will be with us:

When you pass through the waters, I will be with you;

And through the rivers, they shall not overflow you.

When you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned,

Nor shall the flame scorch you.

Isaiah 43:2

  1. You can defeat the giants in the name of The Lord

As believers in Jesus Christ, there is no giant that is too big for us to slay. Please remember that you are more than able to defeat the giants that may be facing you right now, be it spiritual, health, financial, marital, business, or career problems. Let us put our trust in God and believe that we are more than able to overcome all the giant problems in our lives:

No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ, who loved us.

Romans 8:37 (NLT)

Prayer

Dear Lord, I thank You that I am more than a conqueror through Jesus Christ and I am anointed to defeat any giant standing in the way to my Promised Land in Jesus name.

Once you take possession of the land it will rest from war

Joshua blessed him. He gave Hebron to Caleb son of Jephunneh as an inheritance. Hebron belongs to Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite still today, because he gave himself totally to God, the God of Israel.

The name of Hebron used to be Kiriath Arba, named after Arba, the greatest man among the Anakim.

And the land had rest from war.

Joshua 14:13-15

Once Caleb took possession of Hebron, the land rested from war. This teaches us a number of important lessons:

  1. Before a breakthrough there will be a state of chaos

In our lives as believers in Jesus Christ, there will be times when before we breakthrough to the next dimension, everything that can go wrong, will go wrong. There will be a time of chaos and even confusion however this is not designed to defeat you, it is designed to promote you. You just have to resolve that by the strength of God you will breakthrough to your next level:

For by thee I have run through a troop; and by my God have I leaped over a wall.

Psalm 18:29

  1. The Promised Land is a place of total rest

You see, once we get to the Promised Land in the New Jerusalem, there will be no more tears and all the chaos of this present world will cease:

And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.

Revelation 21:4

  1. We can enter into the rest of The Lord even whilst on earth

Even here on earth there is a state of great peace that we can attain once we decide to give our lives to Jesus and obey His Words. This rest and peace comes when we trust The Lord and keep our minds steadfastly on Him knowing that He will never let us down:

Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.

Isaiah 26:3 (KJV)

Prayer

Dear Lord, please help me to fight to take possession of all the land that You have given me so that it will rest from war in Jesus name.

Those who follow The Lord will inherit the land – part 2

Hebron therefore became the inheritance of Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite to this day, because he wholly followed the Lord God of Israel.

Joshua 14:14

Last week we learned that Caleb inherited the land because he followed the Lord wholeheartedly. There are other useful lessons we can learn from the life of Caleb:

  1. You can achieve whatever you want regardless of your age

When Caleb had reached the age of 85 that is when he asked for his mountain. He was not concerned about his age, he was only concerned about the promises of God. We should never let old age stop us from doing what God has called us to do. Moses was 80 years old when God called him and he led the Children of Israel for 40 years until he died at 120 years old. Abraham was 75 years old when God called him. Therefore there is no reason why we should not fulfil the call of God upon our lives because of old age.

  1. You must rest assured that The Lord is with you

Caleb wanted the mountain because He knew that The Lord will be with him to drive out the giants. We must likewise be persuaded that The Lord will be with us and that whatever giant steps He allows us to take He will be with us:

Now therefore, give me this mountain of which the Lord spoke in that day; for you heard in that day how the Anakim were there, and that the cities were great and fortified. It may be that the Lord will be with me, and I shall be able to drive them out as the Lord said.”

Joshua 14:12

  1. We must keep ourselves physically strong

Caleb was ready to take the mountain because he was physically strong. In fact he told Joshua that he was as fit now at 85 years as he was when he was 40 years old (he was still strong enough for war). This tells us that Caleb must have been a man of exercise. It is important for us as children of God to exercise our body so that we can stay physically fit to do the work of God:

As yet I am as strong this day as on the day that Moses sent me; just as my strength was then, so now is my strength for war, both for going out and for coming in.

Joshua 14:11

Prayer

Dear Lord, please help me like Caleb not to be afraid of giants but to ask for the mountain and inherit the land in Jesus name.
